Seeks to change the lives of children facing adversity between 6 and 18 years of age. Our unique brand of one-to-one mentoring matches a child facing adversity with a caring adult mentor. Big Brothers Big Sisters helps children achieve success in school, helps them avoid risky behaviors such as getting into fights and trying drugs and alcohol, and helps them improve their self-confidence. For many "Littles” a Big Brother or Big Sister can help them see possibilities that they never knew existed. Big Brothers Big Sisters of WNC has been operating in Buncombe County since 1982 and is currently serving 582 children.

“Every child needs someone who believes in them,” said Patsy Prickett, a first-grade teacher at Sand Hill Venable Elementary and member of the BBBS Advisory Council. “It doesn't have to be a parent or family member. It just needs to be someone who will believe in them and support them. Many children could break out of the cycle of poverty with some guidance and support. So many children just need a role model to show them how to be successful in life.”
